Marie Curie Nursing Service Lothian – Rapid Response Service (RRS)

The team can provide a rapid response for those with urgent nursing needs overnight. The aim is for the RRS to work closely with LUCS to prevent crisis admissions to hospital and offer a greater amount of overnight palliative support to terminally ill patients in Lothian. It is a reactive service, person-centred in supplying care that patients and their families need in the night hours.

The hospice RRS will also provide support to LUCS with other clinical calls. It is also there to support, enhance and assist the service already being provided by LUCS in the Lothians.

The team:

  • Comprises one Health Care Assistant and one Registered Nurse with a dedicated Senior Nurse who works with, and overviews, the team.
  • Is based in OPD6 in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
  • Works shifts from 9pm until 7am the following day

Referrals to visit patients will come in a number of ways – a visit directly from the hub, or a visit passed over from hospice day teams. Patients known to Marie Curie and registered on the Marie Curie hospice system will be supplied with a mobile number to contact the team directly.
