Muscular injury-suspected tear

Injuries to the muscle belly of the lower limb are extremely common. Injuries to the minor end of the spectrum can be self managed with appropriate advice. More significant injuries warrant referral to MSK Physiotherapy to support management.

Signs

  • Mechanism of injury, Usually on contractile task
  • Immediate pain
  • Feeling of tear
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

Tests

  • Weakness in muscle group/ not able to recruit muscles
  • Pain on contractile muscle testing 

​Management

  • For Minor Muscle injuries grade <2 then PRICE (Protection, Relative rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Explain typical soft tissue healing timescale and support recovery as required
  • More significant injuries – consider referral to MSK Physiotherapy
