East Lothian Physical Activity for Mental Health

East Space is East Lothian’s online source for mental health and wellbeing. It includes many resources to support those seeking to increase their levels of physical activity:

  • Active East Lothian is a website linking you in with local physical exercise and sports activities, training opportunities, events and resources to help you stay active in your local community.
  • East Lothian Active Choices is a physical activity referral service for adults in East Lothian who are currently suffering from mild/moderate mental health conditions, weight management problems, or long term or chronic illnesses.
  • Ageing Well aims to provide a range of opportunities to encourage the over 50s in East Lothian to increase their physical activity levels. Being more active is good for your health and Ageing Well offers a wide variety of activities designed to suit all tastes.
  • East Lothian walking group is free to join and walks are graded depending on the amount of ascent, descent, gradient and terrain. This way you can pick the walk that suits you best.
  • East Lothian Council‘s website can help you find out more about sports centres, pitches and pavilions, classes and lessons, fitness classes swimming pools and leisure passes/memberships.
  • Street Soccer hosts a mental health-friendly football drop-in Prestonpans.
  • Paths for All‘s vision is for a happier, healthier Scotland where physical activity improves the quality of life and wellbeing for all.
  • Venture Trust supports people, at any stage in their life, struggling with issues such as long-term unemployment, recovery from addiction, homelessness, isolation, involvement in the criminal justice system in Scotland, and a history of trauma or harm.
  • Cycling UK manages the Scotland Cycle Repair Scheme. If you need a helping hand to get your bike into shape, this scheme provides free repair and maintenance work up to the value of £50!

East Lothian – CHANGES Wellbeing Walks

The service is for people with mild to moderate mental health issues.

What does the service offer patients?

Exercise has been associated with reduced anxiety, decreased depression and enhanced mood. Walking is a good way to start exercising and also offers opportunities for relaxation and social contact. CHANGES runs walking groups in Musselburgh, Haddington and Prestonpans, supporting people to improve their mental wellbeing by being part of a walking group. In addition, CHANGES runs a Buddy Walking Scheme, where trained volunteers can offer support to people on a one-to-one basis to start walking and walk more.
