Anxiety self-referral – DAYLIGHT

Daylight is a self-referral online programme to help with anxiety. It is based on CBT principles and has a strong RCT evidence base. It is a structured programme, available instantly, and can be accessed 24/7 including for use when people are struggling.

Daylight uses psychologically established approaches including:

  • Behavioural – stimulus control and worry exposure
  • Cognitive – restructuring and relaxation.

The programme is for those with mild-moderate anxiety but can also benefit people with ‘non-clinical’ anxiety who are edging towards a clinical problem. It is designed for those aged 16 and over.

The programme can be accessed through a smart phone or computer and requires “conversational English”: a Daylight App is offered to those registering.

There is more information, both for those advising people to self-refer (How to refer to Daylight and Sleepio (bighealth.com)), and patients themselves – Daylight (trydaylight.com).  The site also includes information on Daylight’s sister programme, Insomnia – SLEEPIO (scot.nhs.uk), which provides an online CBT programme for those with insomnia.

Resources available on the website include:

  • Training video – an 11-min video on what the programmes are, how they work, and the self-referral process. These are led by Dr Dimitri Gavriloff, Clinical Engagement Lead for Big Health (the company that created Sleepio)
  • Introduction to Daylight and Sleepio – a brief overview presentation on the programmes
  • FAQ documents – covering common questions patients ask
  • Patient welcome letters – can be printed or emailed to patients when referred.  These include helpful information on how the programme works and how to access help if there are any questions.
