Physical Activity for Mental Health

Physical activity – especially in the outdoors – has been shown to reduce several mental health symptoms and can help insomnia. NICE considers that it can lead to an improved sense of wellbeing, as well as increasing fitness and physical health, and it is one of its recommendations for treatment of depression (NICE Guideline 222; June 22).

The Mental Health Foundation outlines the benefits of physical activity on mental health.  

Each HSCP will offer its own services, so they vary across Lothian.
