Bowed legs/Genu Varum

Normal variant seen in babies and toddlers
Almost all babies and some toddlers have bow legs to some degree – it is considered normal up until about the age of about two at which point it should have started to resolve. 

Refer directly to Paediatric Orthopaedics for further investigation (physiotherapy cannot correct bowed legs)

– Associated pain

– Unilateral or asymmetric. Causes include Blounts disease, infection or after a growth plate injury

– Suspicion of underlying metabolic disease (think rickets). This would usually be bilateral.

– With ankles together is gap between knees greater than 8cm
