Information
The Paediatric Audiology department undertakes the following:
- Hearing assessment of children from birth to school leavers
- Sound sensitivity (including hyperacusis) / tinnitus services for children and young adults up to school leavers
- Hearing aid provision, rehabilitation & habilitation for children & young adults up to school leavers
- Hearing aid support / review until transitioned to adult services.
NOTE – appointment times vary depending on what service is being accessed but are typically 30 – 90 minutes.

Who can refer:
Referrals can be made by any health professional. We also accept referrals from schools.
Who to refer:
Children or young people:
- from birth to school leavers with concerns about hearing loss in the absence of other ear symptoms
- with uncomplicated cases of Otitis Media with Effusion (Glue Ear)
- with sound sensitivities at a level outwith developmental expectations and which are causing the child frequent distress
- experiencing uncomplicated tinnitus (with or without hearing loss).
Who not to refer:
Please refer to the Paediatric ENT RefHelp pages those with:
- Abnormal ear examination e.g. discharge / infection, perforation, Otitis Externa
- Chronic Otitis Media
- Ear pain
- Dizziness and Vertigo
- Tinnitus with additional symptoms in this list
- Sudden hearing loss
How to refer:
Completion of a referral letter stating clearly any communication support the child or their family require. The Paediatric Audiology online template referral letter can also be accessed in the Resources and Links section – this should be sent to audiology.rhcyp@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk once completed.
