Visible Haematuria

Visible haematuria is the most common presenting symptom of bladder and kidney cancer.   For further information on epidemiology/presenting features/risk factors and the overlap in presentation with other cancers see here.

Who to refer:

Refer as Urgent Suspicious of Cancer:

Patients 45 with no symptoms of UTI AND negative MSU.

Patients of any age with haematuria associated with UTI symptoms OR positive MSU if:

  • Visible haematuria persists despite treatment
  • Or recurs after treatment.

Refer Urgently:

Patients <45y with no symptoms of UTI

Refer as “advice only”

Patients with recurrent haematuria who have had recent (within 6 months) negative investigations for haematuria. Refer as “advice only” and the triaging Urologist will decide if any further action is required on a case by case basis.

Who not to refer:

Those with UTI symptoms OR positive MSU in whom visible haematuria settles with treatment and does not recur.
