NHS Lothian Primary Care Lymphoedema Service

This is a Pan Lothian Service with clinics currently provided at 2 sites:

  • Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre (Hub Clinic).
  • East Lothian Community Hospital.

Please note currently the service is not able to offer domiciliary visits, except in exceptional circumstances.

Who can refer:

Referrals will be accepted from all Healthcare Professionals including GPs Practice Nurses, and District Nurses

Who to refer:

  • Patients with Primary and Secondary Lymphoedema requiring specialist made to measure compression garments
  • Patients with moderate to severe, uncontrolled or complicated swelling secondary to Lymphoedema
  • Patients with recurrent cellulitis secondary to Lymphoedema.
  • Patients living in East, Mid or West Lothian with secondary lymphoedema which is Cancer related
  • Genital / Head & Neck / Midline Lymphoedema.
  • Palliative patients with complex symptoms associated with advanced cancer that can make out-patient appointments.

Who not to refer:

  • Those at risk of Lymphoedema or those with mild symptoms requiring simple off the shelf compression garments.
  • Oncology patients under the Edinburgh Cancer Centre WGH – Refer to Edinburgh Cancer Centre Lymphoedema Service <Link to page>
  • Morbidly obese patients who are yet to request support in addressing their weight.
  • Those who are unlikely to respond to lymphoedema management and the primary cause of the swelling requires further investigation or treatment including those with, acute DVT, renal/cardiac/liver disease, hypoproteinaemia, Baker’s cyst.
  • Those with ABPI of <0.5 – Consider referral to Vascular.
  • Lipoedema or those seeking a diagnosis of Lipoedema.

How to refer:

SCI Gateway* : AHP – Physiotherapy > Lymphoedema Service > L Lymphoedema Service
