A new programme to protect infants (via maternal protection) and older adults from RSV was introduced in August 2024. The same single dose vaccine is used for both groups. There is an existing passive immunisation programme for high-risk infants, unaffected by the new vaccine. Full details available in Chapter 27a of the Green Book.
The 2025/26 programme for active immunisation comprises:
- Pregnant woman who are eligible are sent a letter advising them to contact their local midwifery team to arrange an appointment. Vaccination in this group is offered from 28 weeks gestation till birth. This programme is ongoing, delivered year-round.
- Older adults born between 02 August 1944 and 31 July 1950 were sent an appointment letter offering them vaccination in Summer 2025.
- Those aged 76 up to 80 years of age (birth date range: 02 August 1945 – 31 July 1950) were sent an invitation to an appointment in September 2024. Any patients who did not come forward for vaccination will remain eligible until the day before their eightieth birthday and can arrange vaccination by contacting the NHS Lothian Vaccination Enquiries Line on 0300 790 6296.
A patient information leaflet is now available at NHS Inform on the RSV programme.
