Day Case Surgery
Who should I refer:
- Age 14 – 70
- Weight/Height: BMI <30
- Social Factors must have another adult at home on the night of surgery.
- Must be accompanied home by responsible adult.
- Must have access to telephone.
- Patients must be mobile and self-caring.
- Must be able to give own consent for procedure
- Anaesthetic History. Exclude patients with personal or family history of anaesthetic related problems
- Hypertension Exclude unless well controlled on treatment? (<160/95).
*include BP on referral letter
- Ischaemic Heart Disease – Exclude patients with
1. Angina
2. Cardiac failure
3. Ml within the last year
4. Patients with a pacemaker
5. History of cerebrovascular disease or CVA or TIA
- Respiratory Disease: Exclude moderate or severe asthmatics. An anaesthetist will see all patients with mild asthma or COAD
- CNS Disease: Well-controlled epileptics who had not had recent seizures on medication are acceptable. Exclude patients with diseases of muscle or neurovascular junction
- Diabetes: Diet controlled diabetes are acceptable. Insulin dependent diabetics or patients on oral hypoglycaemic agent are excluded
- GI Disease: Exclude patients with hiatus hernia and reflux
- Gynaecological: Exclude pregnant mothers
- Haematological: Exclude patients with bleeding disorders and haemoglobinopathies
- Drug History: Drug history is important and must be included in the referral letter. All medication should be continued on the day of surgery. Patients on MAOI’s and Warfarin will be excluded
