The Oral Ulceration and Benign Oral Lesions pages were agreed jointly between Dentistry and Gastroenterology colleagues.
They include information on the oral presentations of systemic illness – particularly anaemia, infections, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Coeliac disease.
Also included are local conditions, with advice about management of oral pigmentation, geographic tongue and Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.
The guidance emphasises that even benign oral lesions causing pain and eating problems may lead to faltering growth, and highlights other red flags, too.
