Knee injuries in children are more likely to be fractures than ligament injuries. A traumatic knee effusion is usually a haemarthosis, associated with a fracture and this should be investigated in ED
Patella subluxations / dislocations are also common causes of knee pain

Advise attendance at ED if
- Suspected fracture
- High energy injury
- Rapid and/or ongoing post-injury swelling
- Inability to weight bear
- Deformity
- Sudden onset loss of movement
- Swollen knee (effusion/ haemarthrosis)
