- Often weight related
- Often affecting work, recreation
- Possible previous injury or surgery

Signs
- Limp
- Unable to squat without pain
- Possible effusion
- Possible loss of range of movement
- Previous surgical scars
Secondary care referral
- Only if ALL primary care treatment exhausted
Primary care investigations
- X-Ray – AP standing & lateral to exclude significant OA
Primary care treatment
- Analgesia
- NSAIDS
- Weight loss (10% wt loss = 30% incr in function)
- Physiotherapy
- Cardiovascular exercise
- Strengthening – leg and core muscles
- Corticosteroid injection – if swollen and no other contraindications to csi
- Simple knee support
