Parkinson’s Disease / Movement disorder clinics

Services

Patients with suspected Parkinson’s Disease or related movement disorders are assessed and managed by Neurology or Medicine of the Elderly consultants depending upon age and frailty

For any patients, particularly those aged under 65 years / biologically young or those with atypical movement disorders, refer to Neurology via SCI Gateway

For patients aged over 65 years, there are specialist Parkinson’s clinics in each area of Lothian (please see Medicine of the Elderly Parkinsons page)

The Neurology Movement Disorders Clinic is based at the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and run by Drs Richard Davenport and David Breen.

Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialists within NHS Lothian

  • Patient Telephone Advice Line: 0131 465 9156 (Opening times Mon – Fri, 08:30 to 10:30). The call will be answered by the secretaries who will book patients onto a telephone clinic where they will receive a call back from a specialist nurse. If the answerphone answers during these hours do NOT leave a message as it will not be responded to. The secretaries will be on another call, so please call back within the opening times. This is for Parkinson’s related issues only and not an emergency service.

Who to refer:

Anyone with a suspected diagnosis of parkinsonism.
Patients who have been diagnosed elsewhere with parkinsonism and are new to the area.
Patients should be referred at time of diagnosis and may be re-referred at any time in their journey.

Who not to refer:

Patients who may find it difficult to attend an outpatient clinic. In such cases, remote consultation may be possible.

Patients should ideally not start Parkinson’s disease medication prior to secondary care assessment.

Consider referral to physiotherapy, SALT and/or OT depending upon circumstances
