The Edinburgh Menopause Clinic is based within the Chalmers Centre as a specialist clinic of NHS Lothian’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Service.

It is by appointment only and staffed by consultants, specialty doctors and a specialist nurse.  

Appointments are available on Friday mornings at the Chalmers Centre and at West Lothian SRH (Sexual and Reproductive Health) clinics by arrangement.

Who can refer:

We accept referrals from GPs and from secondary care.

Who to refer:

  • Individuals with medical conditions that complicate or contraindicate use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – this includes (but is not limited to) breast cancer, estrogen-responsive gynae cancers, venous thromboembolism, cardiovascular disease, severe endometriosis
  • Individuals using HRT who have bleeding problems, side effects, or refractory symptoms
  • Individuals with premature ovarian insufficiency (<40yrs) – spontaneous or iatrogenic
  • Adults with Turner syndrome

Who not to refer:

Manage in Primary Care:-

  • Individuals with uncomplicated medical history who request HRT – see the Lothian Joint Formulary  for HRT choices, and our FAQs for further guidance
  • Individuals with new onset unscheduled bleeding in the first 3-6 months of use of HRT

Refer elsewhere:-

  • Individuals with premature ovarian insufficiency who wish to explore fertility options (please refer to Reproductive Endocrinology at Edinburgh Fertility Centre)
  • Individuals established for ≥6 months on an HRT preparation who develop new or worsening unscheduled bleeding (please refer urgently via the PMB pathway )

How to refer :

  • GP referral via SCI Gateway to Chalmers Centre, Menopause Clinic
  • Secondary care referral by letter to Chalmers Centre, Menopause Clinic
