Sleepio is an online programme to help those with insomnia. It is based on CBT principles and has a strong RCT evidence base. It is a structured programme taking place over 6 weeks. It signposts to other sleep guides too, including for people in specific situations (eg shift workers, new parents) and has a forum for questions and exchange of information.
Patients can access the programme without referral – please just provide the link:
http://www.sleepio.com/nhsand you may wish to provide patients with the welcome letters, too (see below).
The programme is best accessed through a computer, but a smartphone can also be used. It requires “conversational English” and is designed for those aged 16 and over.
There is more information, both for those advising people to self-refer, and patients themselves at: www.bighealth.com/howtorefer. The site also includes information on Sleepio’s sister programme, Daylight, which provides an online CBT programme for those with anxiety.
Resources available on the website include:
- Training video – an 11-min video on what the programmes are, how they work, and the self-referral process. These are led by Dr Dimitri Gavriloff, Clinical Engagement Lead for Big Health (the company that created Sleepio)
- Introduction to Daylight and Sleepio – a brief overview presentation on the programmes
- FAQ documents – covering common questions patients ask
- Patient welcome letters – can be printed or emailed to patients when referred. These include helpful information on how the programme works and how to access help if there are any questions.
