Bleeding from Mouth and Throat

Please see Primary Care Management for a simple guide which will allow safe reassurance of most patients. However, it is recognised that some are bothered by their symptoms to such a degree that they need secondary care management. But please only refer once the mouth has been thoroughly examined and a dental opinion sought.

This does NOT have the same connotations as coughing or vomiting blood but patients think it does!

Humans have an extremely good blood supply to the nose, mouth and pharynx so it is common for vessels to burst from time to time.

As long as there are no other symptoms i.e. sore throat, neck lump, unexplained otalgia or dysphagia, it can be managed with simple reassurance unless the amounts are exceptional.

We suggest examining  the mouth thoroughly and advise patient to see dentist if symptoms persist.
