Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND)
This is an educational programme for those newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. We offer a full day educational course face to face or alternative online options.
The programme includes:
- Information on Type 2 Diabetes, the causes and impact it has on the body
- The chance to share thoughts and feelings around being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
- Practical healthy lifestyle advice in order that patients can help manage their health and help avoid complications
- Peer support and the opportunity to share experiences with others
If a patient can’t commit to a day course face to face or remotely they can be given access to My DESMOND, an online app https://www.mydesmond.com/home/

Who can refer:
We accept referrals from GPs or any Health Care Professional. Patients can also self-refer.
Who to refer:
- Any patient with a new diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes (Hba1c >48mmol/mol) within the last 12 months who would like to engage in the DESMOND programme.
- Patients who have been diagnosed over 12 months ago can be referred for access to the online app called My Desmond (https://www.mydesmond.com/home/) but unfortunately cannot access the DESMOND educational day programme itself.
Who not to refer:
- Patients who do not have a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes
- Patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes, please refer to Lets Prevent Diabetes information instead Pre-Diabetes – RefHelp (nhslothian.scot)
