Breast Screening

NHS Breast Screening Programme

NHS Breast Screening Programme

  • Women aged 50-70 are invited every 3 years to attend for Breast Screening, using mammography.
  • Certain women can self-refer for breast screening: If they are aged 71-74 years old or have previously had breast cancer and have been discharged from yearly follow up mammograms, they can self-refer for a breast screening appointment.
  • Breast screening is also offered to those aged 50-70 years in the following categories:
    • Non-binary people who were assigned female at birth, and who haven’t had breast removal surgery
    • Trans men who haven’t had breast removal surgery
    • Trans women who are taking hormones

Invites for people in the above categories will only be automatic if the CHI number is associated with the female gender. If this isn’t the case, they can still have breast screening by arranging an appointment with their local breast screening centre.

If patients are aged 50-70 years and have not attended Breast Screening in the last three years, for whatever reason, the patient or her GP can phone 0131 537 7400 to arrange an appointment outwith the normal screening dates.
