Further Education Institution (FEI) students often present with emotional and mental health difficulties, especially in the months after starting college or university, and around peak exam times.
FEIs in Edinburgh all have dedicated well-being and mental health services, most appropriate for students with mild- moderate problems. Some FEIs also provide student counselling services.
Those with more severe mental health problems can be referred through the usual channels to generic adult mental health services.
Please see the Primary Care Management page for specific advice about students with ADHD.
Edinburgh FEI students with mild to moderate affective disorder, exam stress or insomnia may be referred to student mental health services at iThrive Student Mental Health. The website also gives factsheets, tips, and information useful for all students.
Please note:
- Students with ADHD will have been advised to bring proof of their medication and treatment, previously prescribed by another health care provider. Please see details of the Lothian Shared Care Agreements, which include ADHD treatments.
- Primary Care records – especially from England – can take up to 12 months to transfer and the practice may wish to contact the previous GP surgery to request summary reports of past diagnoses and treatment.
- Students change address frequently and its helpful to remind them to update their new details with their registered GP and any out-patient departments to which they have been referred.
