Medial Knee Pain

History

  • M=F
  • Middle aged
  • Often weight related
  • Often affecting work, recreation
  • Possible previous injury or surgery

Signs

  • Limp
  • Unable to squat without pain
  • Possible effusion
  • Possible loss of range of movement
  • Previous surgical scars

Secondary care referral

  • Only if ALL primary care treatment exhausted

Primary care investigations

  • X-Ray – AP standing & lateral to exclude significant OA

Primary care treatment

  • Analgesia
  • NSAIDS
  • Weight loss (10% wt loss = 30% incr in function)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Strengthening – leg and core muscles
  • Corticosteroid injection – if swollen and no other contraindications to csi
  • Simple knee support
