Some benign pigmented or vascular lesions and tattoos may be amenable to LASER treatment. Other indications include the treatment of mature red scars and scarring associated with acne as well as hirsutism and other indications for hair removal.
LASERS are occasionally used in selected patients for the ablation of precancerous and malignant skin lesion.
Who to refer:
- Any patient though likely to benefit from LASER treatment. If in doubt, a referral may be made to the Plastic Surgery service in the first instance.
Who not to refer:
- Patients with immature scars.
- Patients with thick lesions and / or suspicion of primary malignancy.
- Patients requesting LASER treatment for facial rejuvenation.
How to refer:
Via SCI gateway to the LASER service at St John’s Hospital. Paediatric patients can be seen at St John’s or the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, although any treatments will be carried out at St John’s where the LASERs reside.
