Normal variant seen in pre-school children.
When standing with knees together, observe the distance between their medial malleoli (ankle bones). A distance of up to 8 cm is considered to be normal.
This presentation should self-correct over time.
Refer directly to Paediatric Orthopaedics for further investigation (physiotherapy cannot correct knock knees)
- unilateral or asymmetric
- inter-malleolar distance (distance between ankles) in greater than 8cm
- pain
- functional / ADL difficulties
- persistent or worsening ankle gap of more than 8cm that persists past late primary school
