{"id":8402,"date":"2022-07-25T12:06:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T11:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=8402"},"modified":"2024-09-03T15:14:21","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T14:14:21","slug":"meniscus-injury-suspected","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/musculoskeletalphysiotherapy\/knee-physiotherapy\/meniscus-injury-suspected\/","title":{"rendered":"Meniscus injury-suspected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Meniscal tears have been estimated to affect 60\u201370 per 100,000 of the population.&nbsp;&nbsp;They can affect younger patients with higher functional demand as well as older patients who may have pre-existing degeneration in the knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the absence of mechanical symptoms of locking, most patients presenting with a suspected meniscal injury should first undergo at least three months of nonoperative treatment. For patients not responding to this nonoperative treatment an orthopaedic referral should be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Post trauma or twisting mechanism of injury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prolonged hyperflexion of the knee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased BMI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor lower limb control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Localised pain over the joint line or posterior joint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling of catching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positive duck walk,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive Thessaly&#8217;s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive Mcmurrys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain on squatting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age 15-30<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Possibly lacking full range of movement&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Primary Care Management<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Management<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>X-ray<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conservative trial of Physiotherapy for 12 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activity modification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If true locking and blocked movement then immediate referral onto orthopaedics\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Resources and Links<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meniscal tears have been estimated to affect 60&ndash;70 per 100,000 of the population.&nbsp;&nbsp;They can affect younger patients with higher functional demand as well as older patients who may have pre-existing degeneration in the knee.
