{"id":7990,"date":"2022-07-15T12:02:16","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T11:02:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=7990"},"modified":"2026-05-04T11:13:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T10:13:26","slug":"community-treatment-and-care-services-ctacs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/community-treatment-and-care-services-ctacs\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Treatment and Care Services (CTACS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Community Treatment and Care Services (CTACS) provide services previously delivered by GP practices.&nbsp; These may include wound care and dressings, suture removal, ear wax management, phlebotomy and other services too.&nbsp; CTACS are involved in the delivery of vaccination programmes now that those have moved away from general practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CTACS are organised on a locality basis, the four in Lothian corresponding to the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) areas. Some general principles are outlined below, but please see individual HSCP areas for details of services offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phlebotomy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is Lothian-wide agreement about which secondary care bloods can be done in general practice (or transferred to CTACS where that provision is available).<br>In brief summary these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pre-chemotherapy and SACT bloods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSA bloods where Urology arrange recall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtual haematology bloods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where defined by <a href=\"https:\/\/formulary.nhs.scot\/east\/help-and-support\/for-healthcare-professionals\/shared-care-of-medicines\/nhs-lothian-shared-care-agreements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shared Care Agreements <\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Annual pre-injection testosterone hormone levels for masculinising gender treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>IN ALL INSTANCES THE SPECIALIST SERVICE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGING THE RESULT.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please see the full details of the <a href=\"http:\/\/intranet.lothian.scot.nhs.uk\/Directory\/lothianinterfacegroup\/Documents\/CLINICAL%20WORK%20ACROSS%20THE%20PRIMARY%20AND%20SECONDARY%20CARE%20INTERFACE%20FINAL%20Jan%2024%202024.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS Lothian primary \/ secondary care arrangements<\/a> (intranet only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ear Wax Removal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CTACS staff currently use ear irrigation for wax removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many patients can self-manage ear wax and take measures to help prevent its recurrence: please see the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Ear-wax-PIL-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS Lothian patient information leaflet on ear care<\/a>, which also gives instructions on preparation prior to an ear irrigation appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ONLY those not suitable for irrigation, or where that has failed, should be referred to ENT.
