The SoHT train undergraduate Dental Hygienist-Therapist (DHT) students through our links with the University of Edinburgh.&nbsp; Our students need patients to help them complete the practical component of their training and welcome referrals of appropriate adult patients from General Dental Practitioners (GDPs). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does a Dental Hygienist-Therapist (DHT) do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A DHT provides the following treatment for adult patients: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disease prevention and oral hygiene advice <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periodontal management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Routine direct restorations&nbsp; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some clinical treatments which the DHT students are not able to provide including:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Endodontic treatment in adult patients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extraction of permanent teeth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixed crown \/ bridge work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orthodontics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental implants <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>GDPs are well placed to determine which patients will be suitable for treatment with the DHT students.&nbsp; However, all referred patients will be screened to ascertain their suitability before inclusion on the undergraduate programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does the patient need to know before referral to the SoHT?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very important that your patient is aware they are being referred to an undergraduate teaching programme and <strong>not<\/strong> the NHS Lothian Consultant-led specialist services within the EDI.&nbsp; Patients will <strong>not<\/strong> receive preferential access to these specialist dental services when under the care of our students. <strong>If you think your patient needs specialist dental advice or treatment, please refer to the RefHelp guidance for the relevant dental specialty. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is essential that you advise your patient of what to expect when receiving treatment with the DHT students. &nbsp;We recommend that you provide them with the <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/SoHT-patient-information-leaflet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">patient information leaflet<\/a><\/span><a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/SoHT-patient-information-leaflet.pdf\">&nbsp;<\/a>which we give to patients accepted for undergraduate treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients referred for treatment with the DHT students are exempt from the <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/care-support-and-rights\/health-rights\/access\/waiting-times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS waiting times guarantee<\/a><\/span> and patients should be informed of this when referred.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment provided by DHTs in the EDI is free of charge for patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does the referring GDP need to know before referral to the SoHT?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your patient is accepted, we will advise you what treatment the DHT students can deliver.&nbsp; You may be asked to provide any additional treatment that is out-with their <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdc-uk.org\/professionals\/standards\/st-scope-of-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scope of practice<\/a><\/span>.&nbsp; On completion of treatment with the students, your patient will be discharged back into your care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not offer an emergency service within the SoHT and we ask that you continue to provide emergency treatment for your patient while they are receiving treatment with our students.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student DHTs only have clinics during the University of Edinburgh term times.&nbsp; This is generally from: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>September \u2013 December<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>January \u2013 April<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that our ability to accept patients for assessment and treatment fluctuates during the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) for registered adults<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adults not registered with a GDP (self-referral)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The SoHT accepts referrals of adult patients (16 years and over) for the following treatment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disease prevention and oral hygiene advice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Periodontal management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Routine direct restorations including posterior composite restorations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask that you please:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider carefully the suitability of your patient for treatment with the DHT student before making your referral.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure your patient is pain free on referral<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who not to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The SoHT will not accept referrals for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patients requiring treatment outside the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdc-uk.org\/professionals\/standards\/st-scope-of-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scope of practice<\/a>&nbsp;of a DHT.&nbsp; This may include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Endodontic treatment (in adults)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extraction of permanent teeth and surgical procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixed crown \/ bridge work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orthodontics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental implants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children under the age of 16 years. Referral should be made to\u00a0<a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/PaediatricDentistryRoutine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;Paediatric Dentistry&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0via SCI Gateway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients who require specialist dental treatment or advice. Referral should be made via SCI Gateway to the relevant dental specialty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adults registered with a General Dental Practitioner (GDP):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GDPs providing NHS dentistry&nbsp;<strong>must<\/strong>&nbsp;refer to the School of Hygiene-Therapy via SCI Gateway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a private GDP and do not have access to SCI Gateway, please download, complete and send the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Oral-Health-Service-referral-form.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referral form<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Please note that the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>secure transmission of emails containing patient information is the referrer&#8217;s responsibility<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Information of what treatment has been provided in practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant medical and social history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relevant radiographs \/ images.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These can be sent as an &#8216;attachment&#8217; in SCI Gateway (maximum file size of 2MB, with a total attachment capacity of 5MB).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not registered with SCI Gateway, have images exceeding the file size or have relevant non digital images, please use an alternative option for the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Quick-reference-guide-for-Transfer-of-Images-to-the-Oral-Health-Service.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transfer of images<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adults not registered with a GDP:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can self refer using a link on the University of Edinburgh&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/dentistry\/information-for-patients\/dental-care-by-student-hygienist-therapist\/edi-online-dental-referral-form\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discharge criteria:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We will provide any dental treatment that we deem necessary and that falls within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdc-uk.org\/professionals\/standards\/st-scope-of-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scope of practice<\/a>&nbsp;for the DHT students.&nbsp; On completion of treatment, the patient will either be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discharged back to the continuing care of the referring GDP.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraged to register with a GDP for continuing care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Resources and Links<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gdc-uk.org\/professionals\/standards\/st-scope-of-practice\" target=\"_blank\">Scope of practice (GDC)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/files\/atoms\/files\/self_referral_pt_info_leaflet_on_uoe_wedsite_sept_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patient information leaflet: Routine treatment with undergraduate Dental Hygienist-Therapist (EDI)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Dental Hygiene-Therapy &#8203;Information The School of Hygiene-Therapy (SoHT) is based at the Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI).
