{"id":4404,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/sarcoma\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T08:41:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T08:41:31","slug":"sarcoma","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/orthopaedics\/sarcoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarcoma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">South East Scotland Musculoskeletal Tumour Service<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Service Information:&nbsp;The SE Scotland Musculoskeletal Tumour Service is a multidisciplinary service providing Musculoskeletal Tumour care to patients of Lothian, Fife and the Borders.<br><br>Primarily we deal with Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma. We also see patients with certain benign conditions of bone and soft tissue and metastatic bone disease requiring surgery.<br><br>All referrals are triaged by a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from the SE Scotland Musculoskeletal Tumour Unit, RIE.<br><br>We receive well over 1000 referrals per year, of which, less than 10% result in a diagnosis of malignant disease.<br><br>We operate Virtual and Traditional Clinics<br><br>The success of the virtual clinics and referrals triage relies on good quality and&nbsp;detailed information from primary care; where information isn&#8217;t complete, we may need to seek further information before completing the triage process.&nbsp;&nbsp;(Please complete the referral protocol on SCI Gateway as fully as possible).<br><br>Where possible, please make sure the patient or carer&nbsp;is aware that they are being referred to a tumour clinic as an &#8220;Urgent &#8211; Suspicion of Cancer&#8221; referral.<br><br>Once we have received the referral, we will triage the referral to an appropriate pathway which may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>offering a clinic appointment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>arranging an out-patient investigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an onward referral to a more appropriate specialty or,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>providing written advice to the referrer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>All out-patient investigations will be organised and followed up by the MSK Tumour Service.&nbsp; No results will be forwarded to practices for their action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MM &amp; MA 14\/01\/26<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Primary Care Management<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Please make sure that patients or their carers are aware that a referral is being made to a cancer pathway.&nbsp; Please also consider the BRAN questions \u2013 what are the benefits of referral and what are the risks?&nbsp; Are there alternatives (watchful waiting)?
