{"id":4383,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/restorativedentistry\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T11:59:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T11:59:17","slug":"restorativedentistry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/dentistryoralhealthservice\/restorativedentistry\/","title":{"rendered":"Restorative Dentistry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<title>Restorative Dentistry<\/title>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<strong>Information <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restorative Dentistry encompasses the following dental sub-specialties: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Endodontics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periodontics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prosthodontics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It has an overarching role in the management of patients in which these dental sub-specialities interact and where patients require multi-faceted care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Restorative Dentistry is based at the Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI).&nbsp;&nbsp; The primary aim of the NHS Consultants and Specialists is to provide advice for General Dental Practitioners (GDPs), enabling them to manage their patients effectively within primary care.&nbsp; In addition, they offer specialist dental care for <strong>priority group patients<\/strong> (see referral guidelines), who cannot be managed by their GDP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through its links with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the University of Edinburgh (UoE), the Department of Restorative Dentistry also supports dentists undergoing postgraduate training.&nbsp; Depending on the educational requirement of our postgraduate trainees at the time of referral, we can sometimes offer assessment and treatment for patients who fall outside the defined priority groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an NHS Hospital Dental Service (secondary care), treatment provided by the EDI is free of charge for patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals to the Department of Restorative Dentistry are accepted from General Dental Practitioners (GDPs).&nbsp; Consideration will be given to referrals from other primary and secondary health care professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Restorative Dentistry accepts referrals for adult patients (16 years and over) who fall into the following priority groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patients requiring oral rehabilitation following ablative surgery for head and neck cancer including those who have received oncological treatment other than surgery and requiring complex multidisciplinary rehabilitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients with developmental conditions resulting in deformed or missing teeth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients who have suffered severe dento-facial trauma requiring multi-specialty input for effective rehabilitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients requiring endodontic treatment rather than extraction because of an increased risk of osteonecrosis of the jaws due to intravenous bisphosphonate therapy or radiotherapy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients with periodontal disease which can be demonstrated as progressive despite appropriate cause related therapy and where modifiable risk factors have been controlled in line with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdcep.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/SDCEP+Periodontal+Disease+Full+Guidance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national guidance<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This would usually include patients with stage II-IV disease who demonstrate a rapid rate of disease progression (Grade C)* and \/ or those with Molar-Incisor pattern disease. (Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions, 2017).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br><em>*Aggressive periodontitis (generalised or localised) under the previous periodontal classification system<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We can only commit to assess patients who fall into these priority groups.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all other patients, we&nbsp;<strong>may<\/strong>&nbsp;be able to offer an assessment appointment, however this is at&nbsp;<strong>our discretion<\/strong>&nbsp;and on a case by case basis.&nbsp; This decision may be influenced by the needs of our postgraduate trainees at the time of referral.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Active dental disease should be stabilised prior to referral where possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For patients referred with periodontal disease, indicate the periodontal diagnosis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/assets\/downloads\/111_153050_bsp-flowchart-implementing-the-2017-classification.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new classification<\/a>) and give details of treatment performed and the response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients referred for dental implants must meet our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Implant-acceptance-criteria-Edinburgh-Dental-Insitute-v1.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Implant-acceptance-criteria-Edinburgh-Dental-Insitute-v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implant acceptance criteria<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who not to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Restorative Dentistry will not accept referrals for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adults whose dental anxiety necessitates behavioural \/ pharmacological management beyond that provided in the General Dental Service (GDS).&nbsp; Referral should be made to the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/AdultDentalAnxietyManagementService\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;Adult Dental Anxiety Management Service&#8217;&nbsp;<\/a>via SCI Gateway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adults with&nbsp;<strong>severe&nbsp;<\/strong>or&nbsp;<strong>significant<\/strong>&nbsp;special care need(s).&nbsp; Referral should be made to&nbsp;<a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/SpecialCareDentistry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;Special Care Dentistry&#8217;&nbsp;<\/a>via SCI Gateway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The management of primary dental disease.&nbsp; Please consider referral to the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/SchoolofDentalHygieneTherapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;School of Hygiene-Therapy&#8217;<\/a>&nbsp;via SCI Gateway.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment of dental implants not placed within the NHS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second opinions on quality of care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment in secondary care for financial reasons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals to the Department of Restorative Dentistry are accepted from General Dental Practitioners (GDPs).&nbsp; Consideration will be given to referrals from other primary and secondary health care professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GDPs providing NHS dentistry<strong>&nbsp;must&nbsp;<\/strong>refer to Restorative Dentistry via SCI Gateway.&nbsp; Any other route of referral will be rejected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a primary \/ secondary care health professional without access to SCI Gateway, please download, complete and send the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Oral-Health-Service-referral-form.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referral form<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Please note that the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>secure transmission of emails containing patient information is the referrer&#8217;s responsibility<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be expected that attempts to address the patient&#8217;s complaint have been made by the referring practitioner and details of treatment carried out included in the referral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals should be completed as fully as possible, with poorly completed forms risking rejection.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relevant radiographs \/ periodontal charts \/ images should be included in your referral.
