It is an evidence
based self-help audio programme, consisting of 12 x 20-minute tracks to be
worked through consecutively track 1 for a few days then track 2 etc. It is modelled on a sports psychology
programme so is totally non-stigmatising.

The first 2 tracks use slow diaphragmatic breathing, and Jacobson relaxation. These create a state of internal attention akin to mindfulness, but also restructures the autonomic nervous system building a strong parasympathetic state which switches off the sympathetic nervous system. Once this state is anchored (all subsequent tracks begin with this anchor) it is followed by visualisation exercises, establishing a state of safety in tracks 3 and 4. The later tracks (5 to 12) change the way we see past events, encouraging a growth mindset. It has been established through research with McGill University and the University of Quebec that the later tracks change the disabling effects of negative memories, promoting acceptance and integration without any risk of emotional overload, probably because of the parasympathetic state. The action of the programme is explained on a short 3 ½ minute video on https://vimeo.com/255287474.

The programme is available on CD, mp3 downloads, and the ‘Feeling good: Positive Mindset’ app. The app has been (accredited by NHS Digital, link not working) since July so has been vetted for clinical safety, clinical efficacy, robustness and data security. Approximately 4000 people have accessed it in the past year in Lothian. We have no record of any problems with its use. It has been the subject of a number of studies with Edinburgh University Department of Primary Care, Kings College London, OHSAS, McGill University, Cambridge Department of Primary Care, and has ongoing evaluation in Oxford. We are currently working with Edinburgh University developing a service for students. We have good evidence for depression recovery, anxiety, burnout, and resilience. You can view the research here.

It is also recognised to be very good for sleep and is used
by many professionals (GPs Psychiatrists, CPNs, nurses) for their own benefit
dealing with major life stress. It is
based on a sports psychology programme and uses visualisation skills
extensively, which help any kind of performance, presentations, exams,
interviews, interacting with the public socialising and dealing with family
pressures. Because of the sports
derivation it is entirely non-stigmatising, and because of the emphasis on
relaxation at the beginning, it is easy to introduce to patients as a help in
depression, and as a help in psycho-somatic and sleep disorders

The programme is used by clinicians across the board,
particularly GPs, CPNs, physiotherapists, rehabilitation staff, addictions
staff, counsellors, psychiatrists, and is also available through waiting areas
in hospitals GP practices and pharmacies, and through all outlets in Edinburgh University.

If you want to use it in your practice or have any queries about the programme please contact: info@foundationforpositivementalhealth.com with your name and clinical post and we will send you a codes (username and password) which can unlock the app for your patients/clients: a code for mp3 downloads, and CDs is also available. Through an agreement with NHS Lothian access to the programme through any of these channels is free. We also run workshops free to all staff in the Lothians and the Borders, if you want to attend please tell us and we will include you in the next workshop. We also have an on-line e-learning module which can be combined with a webinar for those who cannot attend.

Resources and Links

Link to Positive Mental Health Video on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/255287474

Positive Mental Health The Positive Mental Training Programme has been available since 2006 in Lothian.
