The relevant occupational exposures need to be\ndiscussed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Diagnoses to consider include coal workers pneumoconiosis, silicosis and asbestosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coal workers Pneumoconiosis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The effects of the inhalation of coal dust on the lung can result in the development of :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>simple coal workers pneumoconiosis (SCWP),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>progressive massive fibrosis (PMF: a radiological definition)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>silicosis (certain collieries mined coal with a high silica content).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Inhalation of substantial quantities of coal dust also predisposes to the development and progression of COPD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SCWP is not associated with respiratory disability or lung function impairment and if these are present an alternative diagnosis should be considered such as COPD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer cases of SCWP when the cause of respiratory symptoms or abnormal lung function is unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PMF may be associated with both symptoms and abnormal lung function;
