{"id":4256,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatricdentistryemergancy\/"},"modified":"2024-08-30T15:29:18","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T14:29:18","slug":"paediatricdentistryemergancy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/paediatricdentistry\/paediatricdentistryemergancy\/","title":{"rendered":"Dentistry Emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<title>Paediatric Dentistry Emergency<\/title>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200b<strong>Information <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the Oral Health Service (OHS), the Paediatric Dental Service provides advice, assessment and treatment for children and young people under 16 years of age who present with an <strong>acute dental condition<\/strong> that cannot be managed in a primary care setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals are accepted from primary and secondary health, education and social care professionals.&nbsp; <strong>Individual referral pathways have been created for <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Emergency-Referrals-from-General-Dental-Services.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Dental Practitioners<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp; and <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Emergency-Referrals-from-Non-Dental-Services.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">non-dental service providers<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients meeting our acceptance criteria will be seen in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at the <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/dentistry\/information-for-patients\/edinburgh-dental-institute-how-to-find-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edinburgh Dental Institute<\/a><\/span> (EDI), Lauriston Place, Edinburgh.&nbsp;&nbsp; This department is open: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday \u2013 Thursday 09:00 &#8211; 16:45<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friday  09:00 &#8211; 16:15<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Outwith these hours, please contact <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs24.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS 24<\/a><\/span> (telephone 111) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no NHS charges for patients under 18 years of age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals to the Paediatric Dental Service are accepted from General Dental Practioners (GDPs) and non-dental service providers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Paediatric Dental Service will accept emergency referrals for children \/ young people under 16 years of age with the following acute conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acute dental trauma requiring emergency management outwith the skills and expertise of their General Dental Practitioner (GDP) e.g.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Luxation injuries (where the tooth has been displaced).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crown fractures involving the pulp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment of young \/ immature permanent teeth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An injury to a child \/ young person considered too anxious or too young to accept dental treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orofacial swelling unable to be adequately managed within primary care (see important caveat below under&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Who not to refer&#8217;<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For patients with lesions in their mouth considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/scottish-referral-guidelines-suspected-cancer-january-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&#8216;urgent suspicion of cancer&#8217;<\/strong><\/a>, please see section on&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Who not to refer&#8217;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who not to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children or young people with lesions in their mouth considered&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/scottish-referral-guidelines-suspected-cancer-january-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>&#8216;urgent suspicion of cancer&#8217;<\/strong><\/a>. Referral should be made directly to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/oralmaxillofacialsurgery\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/oralmaxillofacialsurgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oral &amp; Maxillofacial Surgery<\/a>&nbsp;service at St John&#8217;s Hospital using the specific SCI Gateway.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients presenting with:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orofacial swelling associated with any of the following\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restriction of swallow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raised floor of mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compromised breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant trismus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extension to the eye<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding from an oro-dental condition which has continued despite local measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oro-dental conditions with systemic symptoms which require medical support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026should be<strong>&nbsp;directed immediately to the Accident and Emergency Department of a medical hospital.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Paediatric Dental Service will not accept&nbsp;<strong>emergency<\/strong>&nbsp;referrals where the presenting complaint does not meet the&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Who to refer&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;acceptance criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the child \/ young person does not meet the acceptance referral criteria and is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Registered with a General Dental Practitioner (GDP):<\/strong>&nbsp;They should attend their GDP in the first instance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Not registered with a GDP:<\/strong>&nbsp;Referrals should be made via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs24.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS 24<\/a>&nbsp;(telephone 111).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Requiring treatment &#8216;out-of-hours&#8217;:<\/strong>&nbsp;Emergency dental care for both registered and unregistered children and young people can be accessed through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs24.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS 24<\/a>&nbsp;(telephone 111).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to refer:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The referring practitioner should phone the &#8216;Emergency Referral Line&#8217; on 0131 536 3480.&nbsp; The duty clinician will discuss the case and advise on management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an appointment is required, details will be confirmed with the referrer.&nbsp; The referrer must then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Complete the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Paediatric-Dental-Service-Emergency-appointment-PIL.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency appointment patient information leaflet<\/a>&nbsp;and give this to the patient \/ parent \/ guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Provide an&nbsp;<strong>urgent written referral<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GDPs providing NHS dentistry&nbsp;<strong>must<\/strong>&nbsp;refer to&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;OHS Paediatric Dentistry&gt;EDI Paediatric Dentistry&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;via SCI Gateway, marking the referral as&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;Urgent&#8217;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not registered with SCI Gateway, please download, complete and send \/ provide the patient, parent or guardian with the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/Oral-Health-Service-referral-form.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referral form<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Please note that the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>secure transmission of emails containing patient information is the referrer&#8217;s responsibility<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Relevant radiographs \/ images should be included in your referral.
