The service is regularly monitored to ensure appropriate use and sustainability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Details are on the RHCYP&nbsp;website, including a video showing how blood tests are arranged and what children can expect.&nbsp; It includes the appointment booking lines, EMLA cream instructions, plus real pictures inside the RHCYP to help children prepare.&nbsp; The link to that page is:&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https:\/\/children.nhslothian.scot\/children\/blood-tests\/&amp;data=05%7c01%7cHeather.Levy%40nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk%7cd9452590719441b9387608da53837188%7c10efe0bda0304bca809cb5e6745e499a%7c0%7c0%7c637914121243629935%7cUnknown%7cTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7c3000%7c%7c%7c&amp;sdata=CA\/pTA2wRV\/HTVvNaWQIQ0iLn3Xxo7KM7rM6eu%2BK%2B4A%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/children.nhslothian.scot\/children\/blood-tests\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protocol for phlebotomy at RHCYP Edinburgh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Order the blood test(s) on ICE via Vision\/EMIS by ticking the appropriate boxes in the usual way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the requestors name and clinical details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before confirming the request, select the &#8216;print labels later&#8217; tab for each test group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give the following phone number to the parent \/ carer and ask them to phone for an appointment: 0131 312 1548.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please advise the parent \/ carer there is a short waiting list for tests &#8211; likely to be around 4-5 weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For urgent requests, this can be discussed between the requesting clinician and the RHCYP Out-patient appointments team on the above number. If it cannot be accommodated in the required timescale, the request should be discussed with the most appropriate Paediatric service for the patient&#8217;s symptoms (GI, Endocrine, Renal, etc).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please provide a prescription for EMLA and instructions for use (including dressing advice)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>GP\u2019s will also be required to prescribe&nbsp;<strong>EMLA&nbsp;<\/strong>and appropriate dressings for application an hour before the appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please could you also ensure that parents are advised of the correct way to apply the cream. We would recommend this is applied&nbsp;<strong>on both antecubital fossae.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to put EMLA on<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gently squeeze the tube so the cream goes straight onto the area of skin to be treated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not rub it in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place a waterproof dressing over the cream to keep it in place. (The dressings come with the cream.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a note of the time that you put the cream on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As soon as you&#8217;ve finished putting the cream on, wash your hands carefully with soap and water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the child \/ young person is about to have their procedure,&nbsp;the dressing will be removed and&nbsp;any excess cream wiped off with a tissue.&nbsp;This may not be needed if the cream has soaked into the skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t worry if the area of&nbsp;skin where the cream was applied looks quite white &#8211; this is very common and is nothing to worry about.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phlebotomy service in West Lothian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Request from GPs for blood tests should be made by emailing<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:loth.cwstjhpiu@nhs.scot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loth.cwstjhpiu@nhs.scot<\/a><strong>\u00a0 with details of child and priority of test (routine \/ urgent). Please also note:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blood tests MUST be ordered by GP on ICE before an appointment will be sent to family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the responsibility of the GP requesting blood tests to follow up results.
