{"id":4183,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/nose\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T17:11:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T17:11:41","slug":"nose","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/entadult\/nose\/","title":{"rendered":"Nose and Sinus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Nose and Sinus referral principles<\/u>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>E-advice<\/strong>\u00a0via SCI Gateway \u2013 please use!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients can be referred on SCI gateway to Lauriston, St John\u2019s or East Lothian Community Hospital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maximise medical therapy first<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/rhinosinusitis-adult\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chronic rhinosinusitis<\/a>\u00a0is a long-term inflammatory condition which requires optimised, prolonged treatment prior to referral<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Referrals for rhinosinusitis for red flag symptoms<\/strong>\u00a0are accepted where urgent diagnosis is required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Septal issues<\/strong>\u00a0causing significant obstruction \u2013 please refer, as there are no alternative treatments \u2013 but advise a very long wait (might be 2 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nasal and sinus tumours<\/strong>\u00a0are exceptionally rare \u2013 please see <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/entadult\/nose\/rhinosinusitis-adult\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rhinosinusitis (Adult) \u2013 RefHelp<\/a> and the head and neck section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rightdecisions.scot.nhs.uk\/scottish-referral-guidelines-for-suspected-cancer\/head-and-neck-and-thyroid-cancers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish Referral Guidelines for Suspected Cancer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/anosmia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anosmia<\/a>\u00a0can persist after Covid infection and patient education and self-management are key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Nose Emergencies<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patients presenting within two weeks of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/nasalfractures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nose fracture<\/a>\u00a0who have not attended A&amp;E and have a SIGNIFICANT deformity \u2013 please discuss with on-call ENT at St Johns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For severe, prolonged nose bleeds not responding to first aid and needing specialist input \u2013 please refer to A&amp;E \u2013 see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/epistaxis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">epistaxis<\/a>\u00a0for further detail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Service Information<\/u>\u00a0\u2013 please see the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/entadult\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ENT welcome page<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CM 17\/12\/25<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nose and Sinus referral principles: Nose Emergencies: Service Information&nbsp;&ndash; please see the&nbsp;ENT welcome page.
