{"id":4146,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/minor-injury-assessment-mia\/"},"modified":"2024-05-17T13:57:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T12:57:10","slug":"minor-injury-assessment-mia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/admissionsurgentcare\/minor-injury-assessment-mia\/","title":{"rendered":"Minor Injury Assessment (MIA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/call-MIA-logo.png\" alt=\"Call MIA logo\" style=\"width:371px;height:245px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">image courtesy of NHS Lothian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>The best way to access a minor injury assessment is for a patient to dial&nbsp;111 to get a scheduled appointment.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GPs can make an appointment for a patient by calling the Flow Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the nature of the minor injury they will be allocated a&nbsp;video call&nbsp;or face to face appointment if they require further assessment or treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This service can help adults and children&nbsp;aged 18 months and over who have&nbsp;had a recent minor, within the last seven days,&nbsp;injury&nbsp;including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>strains and sprains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wounds and minor burns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>minor bumps to head and face<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>simple eye injuries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insect bites and stings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This service is for <strong>TRAMAUTIC<\/strong>&nbsp;injuries only that have occurred within the last 7 days. Patients with atraumatic pain should not be referred. The Minor Injury units work within strict IRMER guidelines. The staff will only xray patients where their examination necessitates this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they are given an appointment for a video consultation&nbsp;they will be sent a link to open at the time of their appointment which connects them to a member of the healthcare team. To work they will need a reliable internet connection and a smartphone, tablet or computer with a webcam.&nbsp;&nbsp;If they do not have video technology, but need to be seen, they will be given an appointment at a minor injuries service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Nurse Practitioner will assess their injury and provide advice and treatment within a matter of minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they require a face-to-face appointment at a minor injuries service they will be given&nbsp;a convenient appointment time to save them waiting when they attend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minor injury units&nbsp;are open seven days a week every day of the year&nbsp;at the sites listed below. Please&nbsp;note that if&nbsp;patients&nbsp;arrive without arranging an appointment via 111 they may be asked to come back later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RHCYP \u2013 under 16s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RIE \u2013 16 and over (08.00 &#8211;
