{"id":4134,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/mentalhealthservicesfordeafpeople\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T13:49:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T12:49:36","slug":"mentalhealthservicesfordeafpeople","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/mentalhealthadult\/mentalhealthpsychologyotherservices\/mentalhealthservicesfordeafpeople\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health Service for Deaf People"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/mhdeafservice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish Mental Health Service for Deaf People&nbsp;<\/a>provides specialist support&nbsp;throughout Scotland but is hosted by NHS Lothian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service provides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advice on local management of deaf people with moderate or severe mental health problems which present challenges in assessment and\/or treatment across Scotland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment and\/or treatment of patients at request of or in liaison with local clinicians on an outreach basis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advice\/assessment of the possible requirement for specialist inpatient treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provision of training in deaf awareness and deaf mental health issues for mental health professionals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following referral, patients are seen by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner on an individual basis for assessment of mental state and diagnosis in complex cases.
