{"id":3965,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/genital-itchsexualhealth\/"},"modified":"2023-09-14T10:56:10","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T09:56:10","slug":"genital-itchsexualhealth","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/sexualreprohealth\/genital-skin-conditions\/genital-itchsexualhealth\/","title":{"rendered":"Genital Itch &#8211; Sexual Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Common Causes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/GenitalScabiesCrabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genital Scabies &amp; Pubic lice ( Crabs )<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Psoriasis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eczema<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Topical irritants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lichen simplex<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lichen Planus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tinea cruris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threadworms (pruritis ani)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is a sexually transmitted cause likely?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If so, test for other sexually transmitted infections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is empirical treatment for pubic lice or scabies indicated?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could this be a sytemic skin disease?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>History:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Localised (where) or generalised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sexual contacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presence or absence of rash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous history of skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disease\/allergy\/atopy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recent medication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examination:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full examination of skin surface paying particular attention to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>finger folds, skin creases (scabies)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flexor and extensor surfaces of joints (psoriasis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pubic, axillary and other body hair (pubic lice)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groin skin folds and natal cleft (fungal infections)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Investigation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skin scrapings from suspected fungal infection (onto sellotape on a glass slide or a black paper envelope) can be sent to mycology for culture\/microscopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Management Plan<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If Diagnosis clear treat as per guidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refer if diagnosis uncertain or extra risks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/Pruritus\" target=\"_blank\">See also Dermatology Section on\u00a0Vulval and Perianal Pruritis\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common Causes What to consider: History: Examination: Full examination of skin surface paying particular attention to: Investigation: Skin scrapings from suspected fungal infection (onto sellotape on a glass slide or a black paper envelope) can be sent to mycology for culture\/microscopy.
