{"id":3906,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/electrocardiogramecg\/"},"modified":"2024-12-18T12:43:34","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T12:43:34","slug":"electrocardiogramecg","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/cardiology\/electrocardiogramecg\/","title":{"rendered":"Electrocardiogram (ECG)"},"content":{"rendered":"\nElectrocardiogram (ECG)<\/title>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, only RIE is operating a walk-in service. All other centres require the patient to phone first to arrange an appointment. Details are on the updated 2023 referral form below, <strong>which the patient must bring with them.<\/strong> <strong>Please note<\/strong> a barcoded patient label or minimum dataset is requested to enable patient identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ECG referral form  <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/GP-ECG-Referral-Form-v6-2023.doc\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/GP-ECG-Referral-Form-v6-2023.doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GP ECG Referral Form 2023.doc<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Any patient who needs a Cardiology or medical assessment, or has active chest pain of suspected cardiac origin should not be sent for a direct access ECG.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present the following sites accept referrals for direct access ECG<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>RIE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WGH<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leith CTC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East Lothian Community Hospital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. John’s Hospital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C.W & C.S 25-07-23<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How ECGs are reported.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Royal Infirmary Edinburgh<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ECGs are checked by a senior Cardiac Technician and any significant abnormalities discussed with the Cardiology Registrar before the patient leaves the department.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Western General Hospital<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ECG has a computer generated result. Any significant abnormalities are discussed with medical staff before the patient leaves the department. In general there is no doctor reviewing ECGs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leith Community Treatment Centre<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ECGs are checked by a trained technician. Significant abnormalities will be reported to the GP and\/or the Cardiology Registrar at RIE.  The patient may be transferred to WGH\/RIE if appropriate. In general there is no doctor reviewing ECGs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">East Lothian Community Hospital \/ Roodlands<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ECGs are checked by a trained technician. Significant abnormalities will be reported to the GP and\/or the Cardiology Registrar at RIE.  The patient may be transferred to WGH\/RIE if appropriate. In general there is no doctor reviewing ECGs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">St John’s Hospital<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Senior Cardiac Technician reviews the ECG. If there are no significant abnormalities, the patient takes the recording to the requesting GP. If a significant abnormality is observed, medical staff will be alerted and\/or the patient will be transferred to the Emergency Department for assessment.
