{"id":3788,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T14:03:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T14:03:57","slug":"childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health Child and Adolescent (CAMH)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Please note indications for urgent referrals, with further detail outlined below:<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Concerns that a young person is pregnant\/up to 12 months post-partum and experiencing mental health difficulties.<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Concerns that a child\/young person is actively suicidal<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Concerns that a child\/young person has an acute psychosis<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Concerns that a child\/young person has rapid weight loss and\/or is significantly underweight for their age and stage of development and\/or presents with serious medical complications associated with an eating disorder.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Children and young people with pressing mental health needs having a big impact on their functioning will be offered a \u2018see soon\u2019 assessment within 2 weeks, with the remainder usually seen within around 3 months. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">This does not apply to ADHD or autism assessments which have a separate waiting list.<\/span> The factors taken into consideration for assessing urgency are outlined below in \u2018Process following referral\u2019.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NHS Lothian currently provides Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to children and young people from birth to eighteen years of age. For referrals in those children under the age of five years, experience is that it is best to meet with the Health Visitor, Public Health or School Nurse in the first instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAMHS work as part of a multi-disciplinary tiered system. CAMHS specialists can offer consultation and advice prior to a referral being made and can also offer this prior to an assessment appointment to establish clinical need and priority status. Please see a full explanation of the &nbsp;<a href=\"\/files\/sites\/2\/CAMHS-Tiered-Model-of-Service.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAMHS Tiered Model of Service.pdf<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/camhs-consultation-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consultation service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAMHS are focused on children and young people presenting with moderate (where there is significant risk of deterioration), severe and complex mental health or neurodevelopmental difficulties. Where community-based resources may be better indicated, please see the supports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>on the <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/online-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAMHS resources page<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which can also be referenced via the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/camhs-resources-locality-national\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RefHelp CAMHS resource page<\/a> too \u2013 with localities highlighted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>CAMHS Tier 2 Services<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CAMHS Tier 2 service is a team of mental health professionals called Primary Mental Health Workers. One team covers East, Mid and West Lothian and the second team covers Edinburgh North and South. The teams comprise a wide range of disciplines including Art Therapies, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Mental Health nursing. The team is trained in assessing the needs of young people who are struggling with their mental health and want to help young people access the right support at the right time. For full details please see <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/tier-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS Lothian CAMHS Tier 2 services<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>CAMHS Locality Outpatient Teams<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tier 3 locality outpatient teams consider referrals for children and young people (0-18 years), where there are significant concerns about the child\/ young person\u2019s mental health or wellbeing, and when these difficulties are impacting upon their day-to-day life\/ functioning. These teams are multidisciplinary, and offer assessment and Mental Health interventions. For full details please see <a href=\"https:\/\/services.nhslothian.scot\/camhs\/outpatient-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAMHS Outpatient Teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Specialist Teams within CAMHS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of specialist teams which are a part of the wider CAMHS service in Lothian. These teams may have slightly different access points and referral criteria and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/camhs-specialist-trauma-team-the-meadows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAMHS specialist trauma team at the Meadows and No.54<\/a> (for children, young people and their families affected by issues relating to child sexual abuse\/trauma)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/paediatric-psychology-and-liaison-service-ppals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paediatric Psychology and Liaison Service<\/a> (PPALS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/intellectual-disability-camhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intellectual Disabilities team<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/eatingdisorderscahms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eating disorders team<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/careexperiencedchildrenandyoungpeople\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Care experienced Children&amp; Young People services<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/parent-and-infant-relationship-service-pairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lothian Parent and Infant Relationship Service (PAIRS)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please also note arrangements for <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/camhs-unscheduled-care-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAMHS unscheduled care<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Professional Consultation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/camhs-consultation-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional consultation services<\/a> offer advice, guidance and can provide access to our resources gathered to work with children. It is NOT an emergency or crisis line, nor is it there to discuss aspects of <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/child-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">child protection<\/a>. The professional consultation services do not accept referrals but may advise if a referral is needed. The CAMHS triage team will discuss urgent referrals and allocate an appointment slot based on level of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those referrals that describe moderate, severe, complex and enduring mental health difficulties the family will receive a letter from the service offering the opportunity to opt-in to an initial assessment appointment with the local CAMHS service. Without the requested information the service may be unable to triage the referral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Who not to refer<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children under five years \u2013 in the first instance the Health Visitor, Public Health or School Nurse can assess and then consult with CAMHS or Community Paediatrics where needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those aged over 18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those with mild to moderate mental health needs where those would be better served by other services<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">How to refer<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All referrals should be submitted via SCI Gateway or directly to the individual locality referrals e-mail inbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are referring with concerns related to a potential or confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/eatingdisorderscahms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eating disorder<\/a>, or other sub-specialty (see introduction above), please refer to individual RefHelp pages for guidance as to key information that should be included.
