{"id":3717,"date":"2022-05-03T11:47:20","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T10:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/autismspectrumdisordercamhs\/"},"modified":"2023-09-14T13:43:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T12:43:33","slug":"autismspectrumdisordercamhs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/childandadolescentmentalhealthcamh\/autismspectrumdisordercamhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Autism Spectrum Disorder (CAMHS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<title>Autism Spectrum Disorder (CAMHS)<\/title>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Problem<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with ASD (or who require assessment) will likely present with significant and pervasive difficulties in social interaction and understanding, social communication, inflexibility of thinking and repetitive behaviours\/interests. <br>These difficulties must be viewed within the context of a child\u2019s circumstances.<br>Evidence of the following issues impacting significantly on everyday functioning would support a referral for an ASD assessment:<br>\u2022 Significant delay in acquiring appropriate communication and social skills<br>\u2022 Significant difficulties with the child\u2019s peer relationships in normal settings<br>\u2022 Unusual or very fixed interests and bizarre or unusual behaviours impacting on function<br>\u2022 Marked preference for detailed routine and difficulties in adapting to everyday change <br>\u2022 Difficulties must be significantly impacting on functioning at home or school<br>CAMHS also see children and young people who have an existing diagnosis of ASD and require assessment or treatment for mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD. <br>These referrals should come after consultation with the existing professional network<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Early assessment and intervention with neurodevelopmental disorders is helpful. In Edinburgh\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/speechandlanguagetherapychildrenyp\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/speechandlanguagetherapychildrenyp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Children&#8217;s Speech and Language Therapy<\/a>\u00a0(SALT) &amp;\u00a0<a href=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/CommunityChildHealth\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"\/refhelp\/guidelines\/CommunityChildHealth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community Paediatrics<\/a>\u00a0CCH coordinate to provide these assessments and inputs for children under 7yrs.<br>Once of school age, Edinburgh CCH, SALT &amp; CAMHS coordinate to meet assessment and intervention needs. CAMHS leads some of these assessments.<br>However, families with children with developmental and behavioural problems may already receive assessment, advice and intervention from other professionals, such as CCH, SALT and education.<br>Therefore CAMHS referral should come\u00a0<strong>after<\/strong>\u00a0liaison \/ consultation with any existing professional network (e.g. GIRFEC).<br>Lothian CAMHS follows a multi-disciplinary framework agreed by NHS Lothian when assessing ASD<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Primary Care Management<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Children and young people with ASD may present with increased worries and at times may show challenging behaviours throughout their development. If a mental health disorder is not the cause, the child\/YP is often best supported by those who know them best e.g. parents, family members and teaching staff.
