The FAST team is a multi-disciplinary team that provides assessment, treatment and consultancy for individuals with an intellectual disability and a history of offending and\/or risk of offending that may result in significant harm to themselves or others. The team is based at the Henderson Unit, Royal Edinburgh Hospital and operates Lothian wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The service is staffed by LD Nursing, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Arts Therapies, Speech and Language Therapy, Psychiatry and a Mental Health Officer (covering Edinburgh only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please see our FAST leaflet for professionals<\/a> outlining the services and processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What will happen after a referral is made?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Referrals are discussed at the team\u2019s weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings. After this discussion, the team may look to carry out an Initial Screening Assessment, where two professionals from the team will arrange to meet with the patient and gather more information to ascertain appropriateness. Alternatively, the referrer may be offered a consultation, at the stage of MDT discussion or following ISA, if the referral is not thought appropriate for FAST case management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n C.M & E.P – 17-7-26<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As a tertiary service, we accept referrals from a variety of agencies working with ID offenders such as Health, Criminal Justice Social Work, The Police and Third sector organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Self-referrals are not accepted.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Adults<\/strong> with intellectual disabilities who have a, or are at risk of, engaging in acts or behaviours that would result in serious harm to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Serious harm is defined as: harmful behaviour of a violent or sexual nature which is life threatening and\/or traumatic, and from which recovery, whether physical or psychological, may reasonably be expected to be difficult or impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patients referred should have clear indications of potential risk to others and the need for formalised risk assessment and specialised forensic interventions. We encourage an initial discussion with us in complex or unusual cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patients must meet all six<\/em> referral criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Patients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, please note that exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.
