{"id":27294,"date":"2026-03-18T16:08:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=27294"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:42:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:42:52","slug":"lymphoma","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/lymphoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Lymphoma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Common presenting features include palpable or internal lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly and\/or splenomegaly.&nbsp; Some patients present with fever, weight loss, drenching night sweats or fatigue, but note that these symptoms are not specific for lymphoma<em>.&nbsp; 95% of people with Hodgkin\u2019s Lymphoma present with lymph node involvement.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider full blood count, renal function, liver function, calcium, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and HIV serology, for an adult patient with any of the following unexplained features:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lymphadenopathy (lymph node 2cm or more in size, persisting for six weeks or more, or increasing in size, or generalised lymphadenopathy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drenching night sweats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Splenomegaly and\/or hepatomegaly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathlessness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pruritus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight Loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check serum protein electrophoresis in those with a higher level of suspicion eg splenomegaly \/ lymphadenopathy \/ sweats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider TFTs \/ CRP depending on symptom presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C.M &amp; N.S &#8211; 18-03-26<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who to refer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If lymphadenopathy is found, refer as per <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/haematology\/lymphadenopathy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RefHelp lymphadenopathy guidance<\/a>. RefHelp also gives further advice on <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/haematology\/nightsweats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">night sweats<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/haematology\/splenomegaly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">splenomegaly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/haematology\/lymphocytosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lymphocytosis<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Generalised lymphadenopathy particularly with systemic upset<\/span> (e.g. drenching night sweats or unintentional weight loss) and\/or hepatomegaly and\/or splenomegaly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Unexplained isolated lymphadenopathy<\/span> (2 cm or more in size, persisting for six weeks or more, or increasing in size, or with size-significant lymphadenopathy&nbsp;AND drenching night sweats, weight loss, fever, alcohol-induced pain) \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">please refer as a USC<\/span>.
