{"id":26977,"date":"2026-02-18T14:52:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T14:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=26977"},"modified":"2026-02-27T07:56:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T07:56:24","slug":"penile-conditions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/penile-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Penile Conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Penile-Conditions-Jan-26-flowchart.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:1170px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Penile Conditions Jan 26 flowchart.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-5a41be26-cd6c-4275-9ae6-a21240eae121\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Penile-Conditions-Jan-26-flowchart.pdf\">Penile Conditions Jan 26 flowchart<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Penile-Conditions-Jan-26-flowchart.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-5a41be26-cd6c-4275-9ae6-a21240eae121\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Penile cancer is rare, with around 90 new cases each year in Scotland but its incidence is rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D.M. &amp; H.S. &#8211; 18\/2\/26<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who to refer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer the following patients as <strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-alert-red-color\">Urgent Suspicion of Cancer<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If penile lesion due to suspected STI persists despite treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Penile lesion which is ulcerated, a hard lesion or a mass arising from the penile skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red patches which have not responded to hygiene measures and moderately potent steroid after 4 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phimosis with mass under the foreskin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phimosis with unexplained bleeding or persistent discharge from under the foreskin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer the following patients <strong><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-colour-color\">routinely<\/mark><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If recurrent balanitis with or without unretractile foreskin which hasn\u2019t responded to recommended treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Phimosis with no unexplained bleeding or persistent discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Subcutaneous penile shaft induration\/plaque\/lump which is not visible &#8211; is likely to be Peyrones disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who not to refer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lesions due to STI \u2013 refer to GUM<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red patches which haven\u2019t been treated with good hygiene and moderate steroid treatment for 2-4 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phimosis with no unexplained bleeding or persistent discharge where the patient does not wish to consider surgery Balanitis or dermatitis without trial of conservative measures (see above)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to refer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Via Sci-Gateway WGH &gt; Urology &gt; LI Basic Sign Referral&nbsp; (a penile condition Sci-Gateway Pathway is currently under development)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Resources and Links<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p>Information for patients about Peyronies disease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baus.org.uk\/patients\/information_leaflets\/97\/peyronies_disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.baus.org.uk\/patients\/information_leaflets\/97\/peyronies_disease<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Penile cancer is rare, with around 90 new cases each year in Scotland but its incidence is rising.
