{"id":24402,"date":"2025-06-19T14:12:41","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T13:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=24402"},"modified":"2025-07-15T13:55:49","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T12:55:49","slug":"functional-electrical-stimulation-fes-clinic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/rehabilitation\/neurorehabilitation\/functional-electrical-stimulation-fes-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specialist neurological physiotherapy service provides a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Clinic at Astley Ainslie Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FES is a means of producing contractions in muscles paralysed due to central nervous system lesions, by means of electrical stimulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides muscles with electrical stimulation at a specific moment to perform a functional task, e.g. to lift a weak foot during walking, so it clears the ground.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the device?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The device applied at the clinic is the Odstock Dropped Foot Stimulator (ODFS) PACE box.<br>This is a battery-operated electrical machine that stimulates the ankle muscles via electrodes attached to the skin. A heel switch is placed inside the shoe, and the stimulator is activated when the heel is lifted off during gait<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can be used as an alternative to an ankle foot orthosis for patients with some neurological problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set-up is individualised to the patients\u2019 walking pattern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>M.A. &amp; R.C.\/V.K. 15-07-25<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who to refer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For FES to work patients <strong>must have an intact peripheral nerve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications are found in stroke, spinal cord injury, head injury, cerebral palsy<br>and MS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Inclusion criteria<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Exclusion criteria<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&#8211; Foot drop secondary to upper motor neurone lesion<br>&#8211; Functional walker i.e. person relies on walking for mobility<br>&#8211; <strong>Walk in the community on a daily basis <\/strong><br>&#8211; Motivation to use the device as a minimum <strong>four days per week<\/strong><br>&#8211; Ability to understand instructions for use<br>&#8211; No other medical condition severe enough to impair walking.<\/td><td>&#8211; Severe increased tone in calf<br>&#8211; Loss of range at ankle joint of greater than 10 degrees off plantargrade<br>&#8211; Poor skin condition of lower leg<br>&#8211; Cardiac pacemaker<br>&#8211; Pregnancy<br>&#8211; Severe lower limb oedema<br>&#8211; Uncontrolled epilepsy &nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not a clear exclusion, application of the device requires the ability to take on and retain instructions and to problem solve.
