The bacteria grow anaerobically at the site of the injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tetanus is an inactivated vaccine and only available in combination:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>diphtheria\/tetanus\/acellular pertussis\/inactivated polio vaccine\/Haemophilus influenzae type b\/Hepatitis B (DTaP\/IPV\/Hib\/HepB)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>diphtheria\/tetanus\/acellular pertussis\/inactivated polio vaccine (DtaP\/IPV or dTaP\/IPV)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tetanus\/diphtheria\/inactivated polio vaccine (Td\/IPV).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/tetanus-the-green-book-chapter-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chapter 30 of the Green Book<\/a> for further detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Childhood Immunisation.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tetanus is offered as part of the primary childhood immunisation schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Wound Management.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where patients have sustained a tetanus-prone wound, care should be sought from a minor injuries service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note that People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) are also more prone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Lothian minor injury care is provided by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lothian\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/admissionsurgentcare\/minor-injury-assessment-mia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minor Injury Assessment<\/a> service \u2013 patients can access directly via 111<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many &#8211; but not all &#8211; GP practices offer minor injuries care under the Local Enhanced Service scheme and, where indicated, will give tetanus vaccination as part of that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C.M. &amp; K.McL. 24-07-25<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The spores of Clostridium tetani are present in soil or manure and may be introduced into the body through a puncture wound, burn or scratch &ndash; which may go unnoticed.
