{"id":20672,"date":"2024-08-30T13:28:56","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T12:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=20672"},"modified":"2025-01-31T12:32:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T12:32:14","slug":"audiology-paediatric","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/audiology-paediatric\/","title":{"rendered":"Audiology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Paediatric Audiology department undertakes the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hearing assessment of children from birth to school leavers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/sound-sensitivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound sensitivity <\/a> (including hyperacusis) \/ tinnitus services for children and young adults up to school leavers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing aid provision, rehabilitation &amp; habilitation for children &amp; young adults up to school leavers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing aid support \/ review until transitioned to adult services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE \u2013 appointment times vary depending on what service is being accessed but are typically 30 &#8211; 90 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/children.nhslothian.scot\/departments_services\/audiology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RHCYP Paediatric Audiology<\/a> for further detail, including contact details for the department:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"mailto:audiology.rhcyp@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk\"><strong>audiology.rhcyp@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>0131 312 1407.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sudden sensorineural hearing loss requires an <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/paediatric-ent\/suddenhearinglosssensorineuralpaeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency referral to ENT<\/a> and consideration of steroids.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who can refer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Referrals can be made by any health professional.&nbsp;The department also accepts referrals from schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who to refer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Children or young people:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>from birth to school leavers with concerns about hearing loss in the absence of other ear symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with uncomplicated cases of Otitis Media with Effusion (Glue Ear)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with sound sensitivities at a level outwith developmental expectations and which are causing the child frequent distress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experiencing uncomplicated tinnitus (with or without hearing loss).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who not to refer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please refer to the<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/paediatric-ent\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/paediatrics\/paediatric-ent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Paediatric ENT RefHelp <\/a>pages those with:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abnormal ear examination e.g. discharge \/ infection, perforation, Otitis Externa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic Otitis Media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ear pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness and Vertigo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tinnitus with additional symptoms in this list<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden hearing loss-<strong><em>this requires an emergency referral.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to refer:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Completion of a referral letter stating clearly any communication support the child or their family require.
