{"id":16305,"date":"2023-08-14T13:36:53","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T12:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=16305"},"modified":"2025-09-15T15:41:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T14:41:42","slug":"shingles-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/vaccine-services\/shingles-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Shingles Vaccinations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Significant changes to the routine shingles vaccination programme were introduced in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The non-live shingles vaccine, administered in two doses, was introduced for all eligible patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A phased plan of eligibility expansion commenced to lower the eligibility age from 70 to 60 by 2033.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The phased implementation works in the following way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each programme year runs from 01 September \u2013 31 August.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eligibility is determined by a patient\u2019s age on 01 September of the programme year:<ul><li>From 2023 to 2028: eligible ages are 65 and 70.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From 2029 to 2033: eligible ages are 60 and 65.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those eligible are sent an invitation letter by Health and Social Care Partnership Vaccination Teams \u2013 please see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhslothian.scot\/vaccinations\/routine-shingles-vaccination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>details of booking options<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the programme year commencing 01 September 2025 the following groups are eligible for&nbsp;shingles&nbsp;vaccination in Scotland:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People aged 65, 66 or 67 on 01 September 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People aged 70 or over on 01 September 2025 until their 80th birthday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People aged 18 or over with a severely weakened immune system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People about to start immunosuppressive therapy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People aged 18 or over who have received a stem cell transplant or CAR-T therapy within the last 2 years.&nbsp; (For those who have recently had a stem cell transplant, 6 months should elapse before taking the shingles vaccine.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are aged 18 or over who have previously received the Zostavax Shingles Vaccine and have since been identified as having a severely weakened immune system will now be invited for further two doses of the recommended Shingrix shingles vaccine.
