{"id":16251,"date":"2023-08-03T14:11:33","date_gmt":"2023-08-03T13:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/?page_id=16251"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:46:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T11:46:47","slug":"edinburgh-mental-health-emergencies-mhas","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/refhelp\/guidelines\/mentalhealthadult\/emergenciesmentalhealthadults\/edinburgh-mental-health-emergencies-mhas\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh Mental Health Emergencies &#8211; MHAS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Mental Health Assessment Service (MHAS) provides care to Edinburgh patients who are acutely mentally unwell and in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MHAS is based at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital 24 hours a day. &nbsp;The service works closely with A&amp;E out of hours, MHAS staff may come to A&amp;E to complete a mental health assessment or if safe to transfer, then the&nbsp; patients might be transferred over to the REH for assessment&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For emergency referrals requiring same day input, please call MHAS (Mental Health Assessment Service) on&nbsp;0131 286 8137&nbsp;to discuss.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that MHAS remains a nurse led service and cannot commence or review patients\u2019 medication; and that prior to referral, other options are considered such as urgent CMHT or outpatient review. Where someone need access to an out of hours mental health crisis service, they should be directed to NHS 24 (111) in the first instance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C.M &amp; R.W 12-12-23<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs\" data-active-tab=\"0\"><ul class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-links\"><\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__nav-link\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title-wrapper\"><a href=\"#\"><span class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__title\">Referral Guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-getwid-tabs__tab-content\">\n<p><strong>Who to refer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please refer acutely mentally unwell individuals, in crisis, who may need a hospital admission or intensive home treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to refer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please complete an assessment of the patient on the day of the referral<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please phone MHAS on 0131 286 8137 to discuss with a member of the team.
