Hyperacusis is only diagnosed by an audiologist following a face-to-face appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department offers review appointments to check the child\u2019s progress with sound sensitivity, following initial self-help. <strong>Pre-referral Sound Sensitivity Information <\/strong>isavailable to healthcare professionals who need to signpost families to information for self-help management prior to referral. The information has been developed for <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Sound-sensitivity-in-children.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">children (11 and under)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.nhslothian.scot\/files\/sites\/2\/Sound-sensitivity-in-young-people.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">young people (12+)<\/a> and is also available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/children.nhslothian.scot\/departments_services\/audiology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RHCYP Paediatric Audiology website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Audiology service offers a \u2018retrainer\u2019, which is an ear level device that helps to recalibrate the ear sensitivity by omitting a continuous environment or sound)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consistent reaction<\/strong> (consistently having a reaction towards particular sounds, rather than a generalised hypervigilance)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impacting daily life<\/strong> (limiting daily activities, unable to go to specific places due to the reaction the child has towards
